O for Old-Fashioned Goals
Raise your hand with me if you too agree that 2017 has been the year of roller coasters. From the shutdown of the literal roller coaster, Hollywood Tower of Terror, to the figurative roller coaster that is our political climate, 2017 has been nothing short of wind-blown hair and whiplash.
I have seen myself go astray in a sense of letting the outside world influence my mood. I will mindlessly scroll on my phone while waiting in line for a coffee, sitting at the neighborhood stop light, a 15-minute break at work, or even during commercials. During these small moments of quiet reflection, I carelessly fill them in with jam-packed negative news that do a number on my psyche by the end of the day. Instead of laying in my bed with an empty, restful mind, it is reeling with the subconscious comparisons and heckling headlines I thought were just information to pass the time.
I need a breather and I have a feeling, you do as well.
January 1st…though it is simply another day, it is the perfect day, the unicorn of days, to start something new. Do not pressure yourself with announcing audacious New Year’s resolutions that will be a mere memory in a week. I have done that so many times where I have broadcasted some big goal of mine only to realize a month later… “I can’t be a raw vegan anymore…I love steak.” Instead, write down your goals and maybe only share them with a few family members or a close friend. That way, you are still getting some sort of accountability but not feeling overwhelming pressure to the audience/followers you blurted to.
Remember…that is how it was before social media took over. We did not feel the need to tell the whole world – just a few of our nearest and dearest. Those are the only opinions that truly matter anyway, aren’t they?
Maybe your style is announcing it to everyone because that is what keeps you motivated. By all means, if that is your forte, you go Glen Coco!
However, if you are a little like me, keep your goals and resolutions on the down low and confide in your tribe with what is on your radar. Maybe it is shopping sustainably and ethically, working out 3 days a week instead of zero, putting 5% of each pay check in the savings account, reading the Bible cover to cover, or not logging into social media on the weekends.
Tap into that quiet part in you that seeks rest and order, balance and harmony, growth and stability. It is a good place to be.
